3/12 Coronavirus Prevention at First German UMC

Update 3/13: Worship has been canceled for the next two weeks. Please click here to see the latest information

Friends and Families of First German United Methodist Church,

All of us are following the Coronavirus news. It is easy in the midst of so much media coverage to have one of two unhelpful responses. For some of us it may seem that the media is making too much of the virus, and that the sooner all the hysteria dies down the better. For others of us, the constant coverage is quite distressing, and we’re wondering how much of our lives we will have to put on hold until the rate of new infections dies down.

As the church of Jesus Christ we are not left to choose between slothful indifference on the one hand and paralyzing fear on the other. As John 16:13 reassures us, God has given us the Spirt of truth. We are empowered by this spirit to refuse the vices of indifference and fear, and to take on instead the virtues of prudence and faith.

In just this spirit of prudence and faith, then, let us respond together, as the church, to the challenge at hand.

First, let us make sure we’re making decisions based on facts. The best places to keep up-to-date information on the virus are the respective websites of the Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization. Find links to both websites here:

Center for Disease Control: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/index.html

World Health Organization:

Second, let us prepare to work as a community to ensure the safety of those most vulnerable to the virus, namely the elderly. Here are the measures we will take this week:

1. We will gather for worship as usual this Sunday, March 15. We will not, however, shake hands, pass the offering plate, form a greeting line after the service, or bring food from home. We will still eat together after worship this Sunday, but the church will order catered food, and will be served where we sit.

2. The Pastor and Church Staff will work together with the California-Pacific Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, as well as with the Glendale School District to bring you up-to-date information about local prevention. We will adjust our worship schedule and meals after church accordingly.

3. The Church Office will work in the mean time to offer video of the Sunday sermons on the church website so that all those who stay home can still participate in the worship life of the church.

Look for further email updates in the days and weeks ahead.

God be with you all until we meet again.

With faith and prudence,

Pastor Kurt Poland
